Cupid Who?
Valentine’s Day sucks.
There I said it. I know a lot of you feel the same way but are too scared to say it out loud. It’s basically a random day that someone created just so all of us can go out and spend millions of dollars on stuff. It’s all made up. Even the history surrounding the actual St. Valentine is murky at best. So what are we left with? 24 hours of forced social pressure to show public affection. You also have two groups of people on V-Day. Either you feel it necessary to express your love ad nauseam or you’re single and openly protest love and explain why life is so much better because you can be promiscuous.
Lets be honest, men are forced to celebrate it because of the women in their lives. But it isn’t because women love V-Day, it’s because women are evil to each other. There’s nothing that one woman loves more than to throw her relationship into the face of her co-worker who sits in the next cubicle. If you’re the boyfriend of the woman who doesn’t have flowers on her desk, you’re in trouble just because her co-worker is a b**ch. The truth is, only two types of guys need V-Day. The guy who is a terrible boyfriend for most of the year and needs to convince his girl not to leave and the guy who’s trying to impress a new girl because he can buy a gift without being weird.
My point is this, you shouldn’t have to buy a gift or show affection just because everyone else is doing it. When something becomes so commercialized and forced, the day has lost its true meaning. There’s no surprise and no spontaneity because everyone has been expecting “something” for months. V-Day also makes couples lazy on other days. People forget that nothing is more special than flowers on some random Wednesday or a surprise dinner and play on June 4th. Like Black Friday, this holiday has become more about greed than anything significant and it’s silly.
But like most things in society, we play along, if only to keep the peace and prevent your girl from having to deal with Pam after she gets roses from her man. So even though I think this day is pointless, I won’t be handing out any petitions. However, I won’t pretend that this day is somehow “more special” than the day before or the 14th of March. Broad, public displays of affection are great and have their place but sometimes it’s the subtle, random, more private showing that really warms her heart…
hAppy valentine’S day.
Valentine's Day is more than a day to buy gifts for your girlfriend. It's a day much like Xmas, Thanksgiving, New Years and birthdays- a day to show your loved ones that you care about them and to reflect on what's most meaningful to you in your life. Sure you should do it on other days of the year, but as we lead busier and busier lives, sometimes it helps to have a day set aside to remind us to spend not just money, but also time, on the people that are most important to us. Stop being a hater!! :D
